Krabi’s Tiger Cave Temple

I recently went to Wat Tham Sua, one of Southern Thailand’s most interesting temples that is only around five kilometres outside of Krabi town. It is situated on the largest Karst in the area known as the Khao Phanom Bencha Mountain, and is also called the Tiger Temple Cave as a result of the tiger that lived in the cave when it was first discovered.

The temple consists of a number of caves in which many monks live, meditate and worship in while being surrounded by overgrown jungle and limestone formations. Its main attraction is the 1,237-step climb up to the top of the mountain where there is a huge statue of Buddha as well as the ‘footprint of the Buddha’. It also offers some stunning views of the Andaman Sea and the surrounding area and is a great place to watch the sunset or sunrise.

I highly recommend taking a day trip to the Tiger Cave Temple from any beach in Krabi. Besides its caves and amazing views it is also a Vipassana meditation centre. Thai amulets are also sold here that hold special power as Ajarn Jumnien, the founder of the temple, has blessed them all.
