Last week I wrote about the different beaches in Krabi, but many wonder how they get to these lovely beaches, especially the more secluded ones. So this week I will answer this question by listing all the possible ways to get around Krabi.

The most obvious way, as well as most convenient, is to rent a car. This is easy to do and can be arranged at most tour offices, hotels and at the airport. With a good road map Krabi is quite easy to get around, and the roads here are in excellent condition so there is no need to worry.

Next easiest is by local bus, or songtaew, which is a converted pickup truck. This is the cheapest way to get around but can be confusing for first timers, and a little bit of Thai can sometimes go a long way here. You can also hire a songtaew and driver for the day to take you to all the sights or from beach to beach.

Then there are the regular taxis that can be seen in most major tourists areas. These can be paid by metre or by a fixed price and are the obvious choice for new comers, although not the cheapest. There is also the exciting motorbike taxi, which is fantastic for short distances with few bags.

Getting to Railay can only be done by longtail boat from Ao Nong, as there are no roads here. However, this is very easy to organise and many just show up and find a longtail boat with no problems. The boat ride costs 50 to 80 Baht and leaves when it is full. But of course if you are in a hurry you can just pay for the entire boat and leave straight away.

Being brought up in a fairly artistic family I am always inspired by original artwork and love to visit local museums and art galleries whenever I get a chance. This is no exception in Krabi. I often find myself at the recently opened Krabi Contemporary Art Museum gazing at the beautiful artwork that fills its walls. Here the work of some famous modern Thai artists can be seen, and some paintings are even for sale. For those looking to buy an original piece to bring home this place is definitely a must.

The museum also features the work of local Krabi artists and sometimes even a few international ones, although they always strive to promote Thai artists first. This coming year the museum will feature paintings by German artists Ursula Spraul-Doring and Monika Koppold, and the exhibit will take place between January 24th, 2012 and February 24th, 2012. The opening ceremony for this show will be held at 14:30 on January 24th and all are welcome to this event.

Krabi Contemporary Art Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and can be found on Isara Road in Krabi Town, which runs between Thanon Krabi and the Krabi River. For more information on this lovely museum call Tel. (66) 075 630 061 or email krabiartmuseum.2551@gmail.com.

Krabi is well known for its amazing scenery, and other than its beaches this is one of the province’s biggest draws. But few tourists wander outside of the popular tourist area to explore other amazing sights, such as in the neighbouring province of Trang.

Trang has always been one of my favourite Thai provinces due to its untouched natural beauty. While in Krabi it is very easy to take a trip to one of Trang’s most popular sights the Khao Kop Cave. This amazing natural attraction consists of a stream that goes through the cave for around four kilometres.

To get inside and explore the cave visitors must take a boat trip along the canal and into the cave where they will be surrounding by spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. When exiting the cave visitors will notice that it resembles a dragon’s belly, and the most exciting parts of the journey is the 350 metres where all passengers must lie flat in order to pass through the hole and back to the outside world.

This trip is easy to do on your own or with a tour company from Krabi. To go on your own it is best to rent a car and drive south along highway 4. After entering Trang province drive for around 30kms to a seafood restaurant and a turn off going right, which will lead you to the cave. Once arriving there will be ample rowboats and a guide will take you through. The fee for one boat is 200 Baht and can hold a maximum of six people.

Sea Kayaking is one of Krabi’s most popular activities and no one should visit this beautiful province without experiencing this. It is the best way to get up close to the amazing limestone rock formations that make Krabi so famous, as well as exploring its many caves. This is a fun way to spend a day that will result in some amazing holiday photographs.

The best way to go sea kayaking is to book it with a tour operator. By doing this a guide will take you to all the best spots and it will include meals and all of your equipment, as well as insurance. It is also the safest way to explore the hongs that surround the area.

The best tour to take is one that includes kayaking through the mangrove forests as well as through some limestone caves. A trip like this would take an entire day but is sure to leave all participants in awe. The mangrove forests are filled with exotic wildlife that can easily be seen while paddling through, while the sea caves are a totally different experience. Here participants will be surrounded by limestone stalactites and stalagmites and will be able to see prehistoric paintings on the walls.

Sea Kayaking is an amazing way to experience the stunning nature that surrounds Krabi and is sure to be a holiday activity that will leave a lasting impression on all.

Than Bokkharani National Park is one of Krabi’s most stunning attractions. With the monsoon rain coming to an end this is the prefect time to visit this fantastic natural sight.

Waterfalls, lush tropical forest, hot springs and caves can all be seen while visiting this incredible national park, which can be found around 30 minutes from Krabi town close to the neighbouring province of Phang Nga. Trails guide visitors through the rainforest, limestone caves and to witness magnificent waterfalls that spill into several pools where many enjoy bathing or just relaxing in. The hot springs are also a great way of soothing tired muscles and relaxing among the jungle surroundings.

This is the perfect place to spend an afternoon and enjoy a family outing or a romantic picnic. There are also vendors selling items such as noodles, barbeque chicken and fresh fruit for those who don’t pack their own lunch.

Than Bokkharani National Park makes for a fantastic day trip and can be visited everyday from 08:00 to 17:00 and the entrance fee to the park is only 200 baht per person.

The sun was shining bright this week, giving me plenty of opportunities to head out and enjoy Krabi’s beaches so I opted to return to my favourite amongst them all; Railay Beach.

More than just a stunning beach, Railay also offers magnificent scenery, caves and a hidden lagoon and should definitely be on all travellers to do lists while visiting Krabi. Separated from the main strip of beach by limestone cliffs, Railay is only accessible by longtail boat. This hidden gem seems almost unreal as you enter, as it makes you feel like you are stepping onto a set of a movie or the page of a magazine.

There are no roads here, just paths into the surrounding jungle where you can go on a trek or ride an elephant, which is a popular activity for kids. One of my person favourites things is the hidden lagoon (Sa Phra Nang) and this is the perfect time of year to go, as the tides are high due to the rain that has just past. On the 45-minute trek to the lagoon you can also go to the viewpoint, which offers spectacular views of the beach.

In drier times rock climbing is a popular activity here, as well as the obvious sunbathing and relaxing. Railay is something that all travellers should experience and offers a little something for everyone.

The weather has cleared up a bit this past week allowing me to venture off yet again. This week I went to see Khao Khanap Nam up close, as it is one of Krabi town’s most prominent landmarks.

Khao Khanap Nam are the two limestone peaks that rise high above all else and can be seen from almost anywhere in the area. The peaks are located along the Krabi River with the river floating between them and are not hard to reach at all. After arriving at the Chao Fa Pier a longtail boat had us there in 15 minutes. Upon arriving at these magnificent peaks a stairwell took us up into the caves that housed some awe-inspiring stalagmites and stalactites as well as a large prehistoric painting. There are also some human skeletons that were not so attractive to me but some may disagree. The theory is that they are the remains of people who lived there and got trapped inside.

There is no entrance fee to this stunning attraction, however you must pay for the longtail boat. It will cost around 300 baht per boat when combined with a tour of the mangrove forests and the fishing village of Ko Klang. This is not much for an eventful day.

This week I opted to travel to Koh Poda, a stunning island that is located just eight kilometres from Ao Nang beach and usually visited together with Koh Gai, which I visited last week.

The entire limestone island has a diameter of only a kilometre and is covered by palm trees and stunning white sand beach. Koh Poda is not affected by the monsoon weather that is currently taking place throughout Krabi making it the perfect spot for a relaxing day away from the rain on the mainland. I spent my day swimming and enjoying a good book while lying in the sand while friends spent the day snorkelling. The island is surrounded by stunning coral reef and amazing marine life and is a known spot for great snorkelling.

Koh Poda has one resort offering bungalows for those wanting to spend a few nights on this paradise island and they are reasonably priced. To get here we hired a longtail boat and driver from Ao Nang, which is very easy to do and can probably be arranged through many of Krabi’s resorts.

This island getaway is highly recommended and those that can spend a night or two here should definitely do so.

Seeing how it is the middle of the monsoon season I am always looking for interesting things to do to keep me occupied other than reading a book, watching a movie or drinking too much wine. Krabi us surrounded by hundreds of small islands that can be visited throughout the wet season so I thought perhaps I would start there. This week’s trip was taken to Chicken Island (Ko Gai), which is also called Hua Khwon.

This stunning island is made of a natural rock formation and is shaped like the head and neck of a fowl, hence the name Chicken Island. There are no accommodations here but there is a secluded white sand beach that runs along the peninsula on one side of the island. The other side of the island is made up of steep cliffs that are ideal for climbing or just gazing at and taking some fantastic photographs. The island is surrounded by stunning coral and is excellent for snorkelling when the water is calm and clear.

Normally this island is visited on a tour with a few others but our group opted to just visit Chicken Island and save the others for another afternoon. It is easy to get here by longtail boat from Ao Nang, Railey and Phra Nang.

While most come to Krabi for its stunning beaches surrounded by the gorgeous backdrop of its famous limestone karsts, it is also a fantastic spot for a diving trip.

Although it is currently the rainy season in Krabi it is still possible to spend a day enjoying the marine life within the Andaman Sea. Although many prefer to use Phi Phi or Phuket as a base for diving , Krabi is an excellent alternative and is close to the wreck site King Cruiser, Shark Point and Anemone reef.

The entire area is known for its stunning colourful coral that houses some picturesque marine life, which can best be seen at the Anemone reef. This site is one of the areas best and houses a massive limestone pinnacle as well as a great collection of sea anemones. These amazing creatures attract many schools of fish while at the same acting as protection for them.

King Cruiser is an 85-meter long ship that houses thousands of scorpionfish as well as the areas largest school of lionfish, while leopard shark can be spotted at three pinnacle Shark Point.

There are many diving outfitters throughout Krabi that are open year round and offer daily trips out to these fantastic sites. It is rare that a trip is cancelled due to bad weather making this a great way to spend a rainy day.
